In the 1990s Hayward was influenced by the surrealistic work of Belgian painter René Magritte. Recognized as a master printer, Hayward began combining multiple negatives in the same print resulting in surreal juxtapositions that take the viewer into the world of mysticism and fantasy. After viewing his work, art critic James Nelson stated, "Hayward's Gothic photography has the power of illusion and allusion."
Hayward's work is represented in both permanent museum and private collections. In addition, his photographs have been published in the Miami Herald, the St. Petersburg Times, the Pensacola News-Journal, Golf Digest Magazine, the Best of Photography Annual, and Shutterbug Magazine.
Since 1990, Hayward has participated in ten solo exhibitions, eight group invitationals, and fourteen juried exhibitions throughout the southeastern United States. He has also, exhibited at the New England Fine Arts Institute, and Photo Pro Expo in Washington D.C. His most recent exhibition was a one man show at the State of Florida Capitol Gallery, December 1997 - March 1998. Governor Lawton Chiles in a letter to Hayward stated, "I was able to take a few minutes and stop by the gallery to view your work, and thoroughly enjoyed your powerful black & white photographs."
